Mother of Pearl is the iridescent nacre that lines the inside of a Pinctada maxima pearl shell, the same lustrous material an oyster secretes in layers to form a pearl.

Where a pearl is a rounded gem grown around an irritant inside the oyster's tissue, Mother of Pearl is the shell lining itself, cut and polished into shapes for jewellery.
