Product Care FAQs

How should I care for my pearl jewellery?

Pearls are delicate gems and require special attention and care to keep them looking their best.

To care for your pearl jewellery, avoid exposure to harsh chemicals like cosmetics, sunscreen, sanitiser, perfumes, detergents, hairsprays, and cleaning products.

To clean your pearl jewellery wipe them gently with a soft, damp cloth after each use to remove any dirt or sweat.

How should I care for my neoprene jewellery?

To care for your neoprene jewellery, avoid exposure to harsh chemicals like cosmetics, sunscreen, sanitiser, perfumes, detergents, hairsprays, and cleaning products.

It’s best to avoid wearing your neoprene jewellery while swimming or showering, as the chlorine and chemicals in the water can damage the neoprene and the pearl.

These chemicals can cause discolouration and deterioration. Natural body oils and perspiration can also cause hardening of these materials over time, which is considered natural wear and tear and therefore would not be covered by our warranty.

To clean your jewellery, simply wipe with a soft, dry cloth.

Discolouration or deterioration is considered part of natural wear and tear and therefore replacement is not covered by our warranty and will incur a service charge.

How should I care for my silk cord jewellery?

To care for your silk cord jewellery, avoid exposure to water. Your silk cord should not get wet, as this will hinder the structural integrity of the silk.

It is also best to avoid harsh chemicals like cosmetics, sunscreen, sanitiser, perfumes, detergents, hairsprays, and cleaning products. Place your silk cord on after applying cosmetics and avoid spraying perfume directly onto jewellery.

These chemicals can cause discolouration and deterioration. Natural body oils and perspiration can also cause discolouration of the silk over time, which is considered natural wear and tear and therefore would not be covered by our warranty.

To clean your jewellery, simply wipe with a soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water and a mild detergent. Avoid rubbing too vigorously or pulling the cord excessively, as this can damage the silk fibres.

After cleaning, allow the silk cord to air dry completely before wearing or storing. Avoid using heat sources such as hair dryers, as this can cause shrinkage and damage.

How should I care for my pearl strand?

Each Pearls of Australia strand is threaded with knots between each pearl. Overtime, this thread may begin to wear. Please take your stand to your nearest Pearls of Australia showroom or boutique or send it to our Subiaco studio to have your strand restrung.

Pearls of Australia offers a complimentary pearl strand restring every 2 years.

How should I care for my silver or vermeil jewellery?

It’s best to avoid showering, sleeping, swimming or playing sports whilst wearing your silver or vermeil jewellery as these activities could cause accidental damage and scratches.

To care for your jewellery, avoid exposure to harsh chemicals like cosmetics, sunscreen, sanitiser, perfumes, detergents, hairsprays, and cleaning products.

Regular care should be taken to avoid build-up of dirt, tarnish, and smudges on jewellery. Tarnish is a natural occurrence and is caused by a chemical reaction when your jewellery encounters air, skin, oil and everyday chemicals. This can leave your jewellery looking discoloured and dull; however, this can be prevented with proper maintenance.

For at home care, we recommend using a polishing cloth after each wear. Lightly polish across the silver but be careful to avoid the pearl. This will remove light tarnish, smudges and dirt. If you find your jewellery has a build-up of tarnish, you will need to take it to your nearest Pearls of Australia location for a clean or contact us to return to our headoffice.

Try store your Pearls of Australia jewellery in a cool, dry place, as humidity and a damp environment can cause damage over time and potentially cause your jewellery to tarnish more quickly.

Can I wear my pearls while swimming or showering?

It’s best to avoid wearing your pearl jewellery while swimming or showering, as the chlorine and chemicals in the water can damage the pearl’s delicate surface.

Although our oysters live in saltwater, our pearls prefer to stay out. Prolonged exposure to saltwater can affect your pearl’s shine.

Similarly, exposure to soap and shampoo can also cause damage to the pearl.

If you do wear your pearl jewellery while swimming or showering, be sure to rinse it thoroughly with clean water afterwards and dry it carefully with a soft cloth.

What is rhodium plating?

Some of our pieces, such as our sterling silver and 18ct white gold jewellery, have rhodium plating as to maintain their beautiful shiny quality. As it is a metal, like any other metal used in jewellery, it is susceptible to wear and tear through exposure.

Wear and tear of sterling silver and 18ct white gold rhodium plating is not covered by our warranty and will incur a service charge.

Please note: warranties, refunds, repairs or plating are not applicable to free gifts.

How do I book a standard clean for my jewellery?
