Mabe Pearl Jewellery

Mabe pearls also known as blister pearls, or half pearls, are set in either sterling silver or gold jewellery to showcase the beautiful lustre of our South Sea pearls worn flat against the skin of the wearer.

What makes Mabe pearls unique is the shape of the pearl. Because they are cultivated against the inside of the pearl shell, rather than within its tissue, one side of the pearl is flat.

Our Mabe pearls are produced by our Pinctada maxima pearl shells and are commonly white to cream in colour. There are various other pearl shells that produce other colours – like the black-lipped oyster that produces green, peacock or black Mabe pearls and the Penguin oyster that produces Mabe pearls with pink, champagne and gold hues. 

Yes, Mabe (or half) pearls are genuine, cultured pearls grown inside our Pinctada maxima South Sea pearl shells, not imitations. Because they're formed as a dome against the inside of the shell rather than freely within the tissue, Mabe pearls are typically larger and more affordable than a whole pearl of the same size, while still showing the same natural lustre.

They're set in sterling silver or gold to protect the flat back of the half pearl and are well suited to daily wear.

Mabe pearl jewellery is generally more accessible than South Sea pearl pieces, making it a popular entry point into fine Australian pearl jewellery. Because Mabe pearls are cultivated flat against the shell wall rather than grown as a complete round pearl, they require less growing time and yield a larger visible pearl face for the price.
