Pearl Authentication: Why it Matters
$0.00 AUD
When you invest in a pearl, you’re investing in an ocean treasure shaped by time, care and hard work. But not all pearls are created equal. In a market where imitations are widespread, authenticity matters more than ever. Certified pearls offer peace of mind and assure you of their provenance and quality.
At Pearls of Australia, we believe in complete transparency and traceability where pearl certification along with educational experiences at our very own pearl farms is one of the ways we uphold that promise.
Pearl certification is the process of verifying authenticity, origin, and quality of a pearl. A certificate of authenticity acts as a pearl’s passport, documenting its species, size, lustre, shape, grade, surface quality and most importantly – its origin, or provenance. Authenticity in pearls is important as the value and quality of the pearl is dependent on the certification of the pearl.
A pearl’s Certificate of Authenticity is an official document issued by a trusted authority or pearl producer. It typically includes:
The Pearl Species:
Whether that’s an Australian South Sea or Australian Akoya pearl for us at Pearls of Australia, or a different species of pearl like Tahitian or Freshwater for other pearl farmers.
The Pearl Virtues:
The characteristics unique to that pearl, including its shape, size, colour, grade, lustre and surface, whether it’s blemish free or has some blemishes.
The Pearl Jewellery:
If that pearl is featured on a jewellery piece, what metal that jewellery piece is, and the type of jewellery. For example, the metal may be Sterling Silver, 9ct Gold, 14ct Gold or 18ct Gold and the jewellery type may be a pearl ring, necklace, or strand.
This certification offers confidence for buyers and accountability for retailers.
At this stage, there is no governing body that certifies pearls, and the pearling industry is largely unregulated in terms of pearl certification. We work closely with other partners like Onegemme to bring traceability and transparency to customers and other businesses – so consumers and retailers alike know what they’re purchasing is a real authentic pearl.
Our certification system is led by our ability to sell what we grow. At Pearls of Australia we have a short chain of custody where we can 100% guarantee that our Australian saltwater pearls are grown within our pristine waterways in both our Cygnet Bay (WA) and Broken Bay (NSW) pearl farms, and no where else.
Authentic Australian pearls are internationally recognised for their exceptional quality and rarity. Cultivated in some of the most remote and pristine waters in the world, they are the result of careful farming practices that respect both the ocean and the oyster.
Australian South Sea pearls are the largest cultured pearls produced globally, prized for their stunning lustre and thick layers of nacre. Australian Akoya pearls are equally as rare and renowned for their beautiful colours and mirror-like lustre. These qualities develop slowly over time, with pearl shell often nurtured for several years before a pearl is harvested. This extended cultivation period allows the pearl to build depth of nacre, colour and quality.
Unlike mass-produce pearls, authentic Australian Saltwater pearls are grown in relatively small quantities each year. Their rarity, combined with strict industry standards and meticulous grading processes ensures each pearl is high quality.
For buyers, authenticity means more than simpy confirming a pearl is real, it means knowing it was grown in a responsible environment, under conditions that priortise this standard of quality over volume.
Traceability is becoming increasingly important in the world of fine jewellery. Just as consumers seek to understand the origins of diamonds and gemstones, many now want transparency around where their pearls are grown.
Traceable pearls allow buyers to follow the journey of their jewellery, from the pearl farm, to the pearl shell, to the pearl itself, and finally the finished piece. This level of provenance offers reassurance that the pearl was responsibly farmed and ethically sourced.
At reputable pearl farms, like our Cygnet Bay (WA) and Broken Bay (NSW) pearl farms, traceability includes information about the pearl species, the region where the pearl was grown, the farming practices during cultivation, the length of cultivation and the grade of the pearl. This transparency helps protect both the integrity of the pearl industry and the confidence of the buyer.
Choosing traceable pearls ensures that the story behind our precious gemstones is as genuine as the pearl itself.
Unlike many forms of gemstone extraction pearl farming relies on maintaining a healthy marine environment. Pearl shell thrive in clean, biodiverse ecosystems, meaning farmers must actively protect the waters in which they operate.
Pearl shell naturally filter the ocean as they feed, improving water quality and supporting surrounding marine life. As a result, pearl farms often become thriving underwater environments where fish, coral, and other species flourish alongside the shell.
Sustainable pearl farming of Saltwater pearls in Australia also avoids the destructive practices associated with traditional mining. Instead of extracting resoures from the earth, pearl farmers cultivate pearls through a careful partnership with Mother Nature herself.
This connection between environmental health and pearl quality makes pearls one of the few luxury materials that depend entirely on the wellbeing of the natural world.
While certification offers the highest level of assurance, there are also ways to assess a pearl’s authenticity for yourself.
Genuine pearls have a deep, mirror-like lustre, not just a shine but a glow from within. Surface imperfections are common in real pearls, and no two are exactly identical. Look for:
Subtle variations in shape: It’s highly uncommon to have a perfectly round pearl unless it’s of extremely high value.
Natural overtone in colour: Uniformity in colour is also not common in authentic pearls, whether South Sea or Akoya, pearl colour typically has differences in the overtones.
Fine ridges or blemishes: If you can spot little blemishes and spots on the pearl surface, it’s likely a sign that this pearl is authentic.
A classic at-home method is the tooth test. Gently rub the pearl against your front teeth and if real, you’ll notice that the pearls feel gritty while imitation or fake pearls feel smooth and plasticky.
Other techniques include:
Pearl Weight: Checking the weight of the pearl, real pearls are heavier than fake pearls.
Drill Holes: Examine the pearl for drill holes, there will be fine particles around the drill hole if plastic, meaning they are not authentic. An authentic pearl will not have fibres or dust around the drill hole.

For complete peace of mind, professional evaluation is recommended. Although we cannot do this in-house, we are encourage you to contact the National Council of Jewellery Valuers who are professional valuators and nationally accredited.
Imitation pearls may look similar at first glance, but they lack the natural qualities that give genuine pearls their beauty and longevity. As mentioned above, many imitation pearls are made from plastic or glass beads coated with a thin pearlescent finish. Over time, this coating can wear away, revealing the artificial core beneath.
Misrepresented pearls can also come from an unknown source, with little transparency about how they were produced. Without clear provenance, buyers cannot be certain whether their pearl was sourced from Australian waters, if the pearl is an Australian pearl, or if it was responsibly sourced and ethically handled.
Authentic pearls, by contrast, are organic gemstones formed through a natural biological process within a living oyster. Their value blikes not only in their rarity and beauty, but also in the time, care and environment required to cultivate them.
Choosing authentic pearls ensures that the piece you invest in will retain its beauty, and you will have assurance that what you're really buying is an Australian Saltwater pearl.
When you choose authentic pearls, you're making an investment and supporting a tradition of careful cultivation, environmental stewardship and craftsmanship that has been refined over generations.
Authentic Australian pearls represent the unique environments in which they are grown, from the Kimberley home to our Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm to the winding estuaries of our Broken Bay Pearl Farm. Each pearl carries the story of the ocean, the pearl shell and the people who nurture it.
For those seeking jewellery or loose pearls with genuine origin and a meaningful connection to our planet, authenticity is what makes a pearl truly valuable.
Pearl certification is more than value, it’s also about trust, quality and sustainability. A Certificate of Authenticity confirms that your pearl is exactly what you paid for, and this is especially true for high-value pieces like pearl strand necklaces or items featuring large Australian South Sea pearls.
Certified pearls are more likely to be ethically sourced and sustainably cultivated, with full traceability back to our pearl farms and the pearl shell that it was grown clearly stated. At Pearls of Australia we only sell what we grow at our Cygnet Bay (WA) and Broken Bay (NSW) pearl farms, ensuring each piece reflects responsible marine stewardship.
When buying pearls, choose sources that are transparent and reputable. We recommend looking for:
- Full product descriptions that list the pearl species, type, origin, and virtues.
- Certificates of Authenticity
- Retailers with direct links to pearl farms.
We’re proud to be able to offer all the above, with each of our pearl jewellery pieces backed with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Every pearl has a story and we take pride in offering pearls with their story of provenance.

In most cases, you should receive a certificate of authenticity, especially from a trusted seller. At Pearls of Australia, all pearl jewellery and loose pearl purchases come with a certificate of authenticity outlining your pearl’s origin and characteristics.
Not all pearls are certified. Mass-market or imitation pearls often lack documentation. Certified pearls are found through high-quality jewellers or direct from farm brands like Pearls of Australia.
You most definitely can! You can contact the National Council of Jewellery Valuers for your closest evaluator. This is particularly useful for heirloom pearl jewellery pieces.
At this stage, if your piece is not a Pearls of Australia jewellery item we cannot certify your pearls, nor are we a pearl certification vendor.
