  • Recognition of best practice in sustainable, nature-based tourism by Ecotourism Australia
  • Certification reflects long-standing pearl farming practices that depend on healthy marine environments
  • Certification aligns with Tourism Australia’s Green is Our Gold initiative

Pearls of Australia is proud to announce that both Broken Bay Pearl Farm in New South Wales and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm in Western Australia are now Eco Certified by Ecotourism Australia

The certification, awarded by Ecotourism Australia, recognises operators who meet high standards in sustainable, nature-based tourism and reflects the care and responsibility required to achieve it.

For Pearls of Australia, sustainability is not a new initiative, but a fundamental part of how pearl farming has always been conducted.

“As pearl farmers, everything we do depends on the health of the ocean,” said James Brown. “This certification reflects the way we’ve always operated, working closely with nature and adapting to the environments we farm in.”

At Broken Bay Pearl Farm, located on the NSW Central Coast, all tours are now Eco Certified, offering visitors insight into oyster farming, pearl production, and the role oysters play in maintaining healthy waterways.

At Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, on the remote Kimberley coast, Eco Certified experiences include the Pearl Farm Harvest Tour, Sea Safaris, the Pearl Technicians Experience, and accommodation at Diver’s Creek and the Pearler’s Village.

Operating in one of Australia’s most pristine marine environments, Cygnet Bay is shaped by some of the largest tropical tides in the world, with natural cycles influencing every aspect of daily life at a working pearl farm.

The certification aligns with Tourism Australia’s “Green is Our Gold” initiative , which encourages both operators and travellers to protect the environments, cultures, and communities that make Australia unique.

For visitors, Eco Certification provides confidence that their experience supports responsible tourism practices and contributes to the long-term health of the region.

Pearls of Australia continues to welcome guests to experience its working pearl farms, where every pearl begins with a healthy environment.

It is little wonder that the humble pearl is increasingly becoming known as the world’s most sustainable gem.

About Pearls of Australia

For three generations, te Brown family has cultivated some of the world’s finest quality pearls in Australia’s most unspoiled waters, guided by a deep connection to the ocean and a commitment to sustainable practices.

Pearls of Australia is uniquely positioned as the only enterprise in the country to cultivate and market two native species of Australian pearl shell - South Sea pearls and Akoya pearls - from west to east.

Through its two pearl farms, Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm in Western Australia and Broken Bay Pearl Farm in New South Wales, the business offers immersive tourism experiences that provide rare access to the world of pearling, creating a legacy as enduring as the pearls themselves.

  About Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

Established in 1946 on the remote Kimberley coast, Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm is one of Australia’s longest-standing pearling operations.

Located north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula, the farm operates in one of the most pristine and dynamic marine environments in the world, shaped by some of the largest tropical tides.

Today, Cygnet Bay produces Australian South Sea pearls and offers a range of immersive experiences, including pearl farm tours, sea safaris, and eco accommodation at Diver’s Creek and the Pearler’s Village.

Working in close connection with the natural environment and alongside the Bardi Jawi people, Cygnet Bay continues a legacy of pearling that spans generations.

About Broken Bay Pearl Farm

Established in 2003, Broken Bay Pearl Farm is the only pearl producer in New South Wales, located on the Hawkesbury River on the NSW Central Coast.

Specialising in the cultivation of Australian Akoya pearls, the farm has developed a reputation for producing pearls of exceptional lustre and natural colour, achieved through longer cultivation periods and careful farming practices.

In 2018, Broken Bay Pearl Farm joined with Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm to form Pearls of Australia, bringing together two distinct pearling regions and species from east to west.

Today, Broken Bay Pearl Farm offers immersive visitor experiences that combine pearl farming, oyster tasting, and on-water tours, providing a unique connection to both the product and the environment in which it is grown.
