Testing your pearls
visual inspection
The first test or examination that you should conduct to check the difference between fake and real pearls is a simple visual inspection that takes into account the above parameters.
First and foremost, real pearls will have some blemishes, like tiny bumps on the surface of the pearl, and no two pearls will be totally identical when compared side by side. Although very high-value and high-quality pearls will have minor blemishes and pits, they will still have the smallest imperfections. This is what makes each pearl unique!
Secondly, colours will vary with real pearls - and this colour change is most noticeable when pearls are compared side by side on a pearl strand necklace or bracelet. Fake pearls will have identical colours, and will lack overtones.
Drill Hole examination
To hand craft our pearl jewellery, our jeweller's need to drill into the pearls to secure them in their setting, or string them onto silk thread to create pearl strand necklaces or bracelets.
The drill holes made by jeweller's can give away the difference between real and fake pearls in most instances. Often, fake pearls will have an uneven build up of material around their drill holes - usually consisting of acrylic paint that has been sued to cover a bead. This build up is commonly a pearlescent outer coating which has chipped away or peeled away.
On the other hand, real pearls will have a clean drill hole, with no build up of material around the drill holes. Furthermore, there isn't the ability to peel off any layers or outercoating - because their simply isn't an outercoating!
the tooth test
You can also apply the tooth test to check for grittiness. This involves rubbing the pearl lightly against the front of your tooth. Remember not to rub the pearl against the side of your tooth, as this may scratch the pearl. Again, you’re looking for a gritty texture, which you won’t get if the pearl is fake.
While the tooth test is useful, it's unfortunately not super accurate. Some fake pearl suppliers have begun using a special outercoating to their fake pearls to add a gritty texture - just like a real pearl!
